About Phone Safety
Fire
According to a report by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), between 2014 and 2018, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 5,800 fires per year that involved electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. These fires resulted in an annual average of two civilian deaths, 45 civilian injuries, and $204 million in property damage.
Furthermore, a study by Batteryuniversity.com found that lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in smartphones, can generate heat and ignite if they are overcharged, damaged, or exposed to high temperatures. This heat buildup can cause a phenomenon called “thermal runaway,” which can result in a fire or explosion.
In studys and reports we have found:
Global Fire Incidents: The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reported that between 2014 and 2018, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 5,800 fires per year involving electronic devices, including phones.
Lithium-Ion Battery Fires: Lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in smartphones, have been associated with fire incidents. A study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimated that from 2016 to 2019, there were approximately 180 incidents of fires and smoke emissions related to lithium-ion batteries in consumer products, including phones.
Battery Overheating: Overheating is a common cause of phone-related fires. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) reported that in the UK, there were approximately 22 mobile phone battery overheating incidents every week in 2017.
Charging Related Fires: Improper charging practices can also contribute to fire incidents. In 2020, the London Fire Brigade in the UK responded to 237 fires caused by chargers, batteries, or cables, some of which were related to phone charging.
These statistics, while not country specific, highlight the importance of being cautious while charging electronic devices, including smartphones, to prevent fires and potential harm to people and property. The Chargenanny phone holder with a built-in smoke alarm is an innovative solution that can provide an extra layer of protection against phone-related fires, potentially saving lives and preventing damage to homes and property.
